Team SIBI and National Careers Week
National Careers Week is one of the biggest weeks for us at See it Be it, with lots of activities going on across our network of schools and colleges. It’s also a great opportunity for employers to get involved in activities and shout about all the great things they are doing to inspire the next generation.
It was a busy week for us, with the team out at events and activities every day! Craig and Chris started the week with a workshop on elective home education, collaborating with regional partners on a roadmap to improve pathways into post-16 and employment.
Outwood Academy City Careers Fair
On Tuesday Sam was at Outwood Academy City for their annual careers fair for all years 7-11. Over 1,000 students were in attendance, meeting employers from Vinci, HM Prison and Probation Service, Sheffield City Council, Fragomen and more, hearing about routes into different sectors and the skills employers are looking for.
On the same day, Craig was at 50 Careers in One Day with Building our Skills, a large event at Barnsley Football Club showcasing the huge number of careers in fenestration – and if that’s not a word that’s familiar to you, it means all things in the glass and glazing industry.
On Wednesday, Graham delivered an online ‘Work with German’ session to students at Oasis Don Valley, with a panel of volunteers from Fragomen, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Insight talking about how they use the language at work and the benefits that speaking another language has brought to their career.
At the same time, Craig was at Holgate Meadows delivering mock interviews, Sam was at a network meeting sharing best practice with colleagues from Careers Hubs across the region, and there was careers fair at Hinde House for 800 of their students attended by Gripple, Virgin Money, Sheffield City Council, Fortem, Fragomen and Efficiency North.
On Thursday Graham and Charlotte popped along to Hillsborough Stadium for the amazing Apprenticeships: Be Inspired event organised by our colleagues at Opportunity Sheffield. They had a brilliant time chatting with employers, colleagues, teachers and students about apprenticeships, and it was great to see the sheer number on offer in the city.
Charlotte finished the week with a visit to Tapton School for their careers carousel event with volunteers from NG Bailey, Vinci, Insight, Charm and RLB, with students hearing all about skills needed for the workplace, whilst Sam was at Longley Park Sixth Form celebrating International Women’s Day.
We all really enjoyed getting out and about for the week and meeting Careers Leaders, students and employers and it was wonderful seeing so many activities going on.
Of course for us at See it Be it every week is careers week, so if you are an employer who would like to get more involved in activities like the above, or an educator looking for volunteers for your activities, contact us on seeitbeit@sheffield.gov.uk.
